Fly Fishing with Doug Mcnair
A Product Update: Scientific Anglers Latest Goodies...
For the last several weeks I've enjoyed kidding Sci-Anglers about their new fly box, the System "X." It's waterproof and lends itself to being trolled for Gators ... at least that what I've suggested. More importantly, the System "X" fly box is a magnificent way to carry your flies...
It is, as I mentioned, waterproof and because of its design can accommodate ever so many different interchangeable inserts. Said another way, you can easily load a single "X" box to accommodate an entire day on the water ... Simply insert or remove a System "X" insert that you've preloaded with flies.
Whether preparing to "matching the hatch" or simply loading an array of wet, dry, or streamers, the System "X" box is the cat's meow when it comes to ease of carry. No longer will I load a bunch of little fly boxes, each carrying an array great flies ... only to find the fly I want isn't in the box(es) I decided to carry. The Ancient Fish Gods always seem to make certain the right fly is always in the wrong box. Better to carry the suitcase (shown below) and load the inserts at streamside. It's much easier to switch inserts than to practice the "put & take" of fly selection -- taking one or two flies from here and putting them there... (But, whatever you do, don't forget your Buggers
The System "X" box is a great innovation ... although perhaps not quite as important as the wheel -- but you would be missing a bet if you didn't check it out. They even have a suitcase to carry the inserts ... makes what used to be time consuming and never right -- simple!
The Fly Fishing Pad. If you haven't tried one, by all means do ... Inexpensive but extremely effective, the Sci-Anglers fly line cleaning pad is something neither you nor I should be without when fly fishing. It can be used when your line is either wet or dry and is good for an infinite number of applications. I use mine a couple of times a day in our local waters.
It is a fact that the lovely clear water you are fishing is odds on to be contaminated and dirty ... Sad, but true! The last time I checked I believe about 60% of U.S. waters were declared "sick" from something. Whether or not you are into catch & release isn't in debate -- but if you are warned to limit your intake of fish, I think you are safe in assuming your fly line might just need a cleaning. If nothing else, your fly casting stroke will appreciate your thoughtfulness in providing a clean line. Each package contains two pads, each with pre-punched hole for attaching to your retractor or lanyard.
