Yamaha's Fantastic Four
By Samuel T. Forbes

It was about February and my Crestliner TS 172 was to be ordered in about 2 weeks. I needed to choose an outboard to complete the rig and began a search for the perfect mate.

Selecting which brand to use was the easiest choice to make. As an outdoor writer, guide, and tournament angler, I've had the opportunity to either own or test many of the major engines available. The company that has impressed me the most over the years is Yamaha Outboards.

They are always on the cutting edge of both quality and innovation, making a virtually bullet proof engine.

Despite the fact that two strokes have always served me well, I had been considering a four stroke for main power for the last few years. Now, with the push for cleaner running, more fuel efficient motors as well as the soaring gas prices, I decided it was time to make the switch.

Two weeks later, a new Yamaha F115 fuel injected four stroke, arrived at the dealership. It was already installed on the boat and I was immediately impressed with the looks of the motor and how well it complimented the rig. Within an hour, anticipation grew as I backed the boat into the water for the first test run.

With a quick turn of the key, the motor started instantly even though the temperature was a mere 38 degrees. Although my expectations were high, the quietness and smoothness of the engine were still surprising. It sounded just like my kicker motor and was truly just as quiet. With virtually no vibration or smoke, you could barely tell it was even running!

Since the motor was new and in the break-in period, I eased the throttle forward and the boat slipped out of the hole and onto plain effortlessly. Bringing the rpm's up to about 4800, the gps indicated my speed at just under 40 mph. Even at this speed, the noise level was quite low, no more leaning over and screaming in your buddy's ear when you are motoring down the lake.

After a few runs through the rpm range my trial run came to an end. I was very pleased to say the least and couldn't wait to put a few more hours on the rig.

Being mid summer now, and having nearly 100 hours on it, I can say with confidence that the F115 is by far the finest motor ever on one of my boats. The hole shot is excellent and at 5600 rpm's, pushes my rig at a top speed of 44.5 miles per hour. Not bad for a boat that can take a 150! The starts are always instant regardless of conditions and both the quietness and smoothness are unrivaled. The fuel economy is also excellent, sipping gas like fine wine and making trips to the service station few and far between.

If you are considering an outboard in this horse power range, don't make a purchase without testing the Yamaha F115. Once you have first hand experience, I'm sure you'll be convinced.. If you live in the east, feel free to email me and I can arrange a test drive any time. Good fishing!
