Jim Smith is an avid outdoorsman, sportsman, trophy hunter, fisherman and competitive shooter. He is the managing editor for MUSKIE Magazine and as a field editor for MUSKY HUNTER Magazine. He has been a featured celebrity speaker at the International Sportsmen's Exposition. He served as Muskies, Inc. International President 1997-1999 and continues as an at-large-director. He served as a Commissioner for the Colorado Division of Wildlife from 1979 to 1987. Jim stocked the first tiger muskies in the state of Colorado in 1983, and in 1995 stocked the first tiger muskies on Colorado’s western slope. He is the founder and Past President of the Colorado Chapter of Muskies, Inc. Jim was the first inductee into the Colorado Chapter HALL OF FAME.

Jim was a director for the National Rifle Association. He is a past-president and founding director of the United Sportsmen's Council. He has been a member of a number of celebrity teams such as the One-Shot Antelope Hunt, Two-Shot Goose Hunt, One-Box Pheasant Hunt, World Muskie Hunt, Florida Desert Wild Turkey Hunt, and the Arkansas Valley Invitational Dove Hunt. Jim was the recipient of the 1991 Fishing & Hunting News " Personality of the Year" award. He was the 1996 recipient of the United Sportsmen’s Council "Sportsman of the Year" Award. He is a member of the Muskies, Inc. 1992, 93, and 94 Gill Hamm Memorial "Chapter Challunge" Championship Teams. Jim is a member of the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and is listed with a World Line Class Record. He is an active member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America.

Jim is a NRA Endowment Member, Life Member of the following organizations: Amateur Trap Shooting Association, Muskies, Inc., Watkins/Golden Gun Club, One-Shot Antelope Hunt Past Shooters, One-Box Pheasant Hunt Past Shooters, Arkansas Valley Dove Hunt Past Shooters, World Musky Hunt Team. He has received Honorary Life Memberships in the Denver Bassmasters, Colorado Bow Hunters Association.

He is a graduate of the University of Denver (1959) where he majored in Building Industry and Real Estate. He presently owns his own real estate brokerage firm in Littleton.
